I'll be speaking in Palos Verdes on June 27 (Los Angeles Area)

Many people have asked me when am I going to be speaking in LA? It's kind of strange - I've only spoken in the LA area 3 times - Once at Vroman's in Pasadena (GREAT BOOKSTORE! IF you don't have an independent bookstore near you, try ordering from Vroman's and having it mailed to you: http://www.vromansbookstore.com).

And once at the Los Angeles Natural History Museum, which was a thrill because we used to go there ALL the time as kids. We took turns choosing what the Saturday field trip/family trip/activity was going to be. I almost always chose the Natural History Museum. Love that place!

And once at a writers' conference by the Southwest Manuscripters' - but that was about writing, not as much about Wesley.

That's not a lot of speaking in such a large area so close to my home.

So I'm thrilled to be able to speak in the "LA Area" again (note that the "LA Area" includes a huge conglomerate of smaller "cities" that are all swallowed up in what we call "LA").

Enough trivia..

I'll be at the Palos Verdes BORDERS BOOKS in Rolling Hills Estates on Saturday, June 27, at 2:00pm.
This Borders is in a mall called "Promenade on the Penninsula" at 550 Deep Valley Drive, 90274

I hope you can make it! I'll be speaking, answering questions, and signing books. I'd love to meet you if you're in the area and can come!

Sincerely,
Stacey

ALSO, Sy Montgomery, who I've referred to as "Indiana Jane" in previous posts, who has lived some of the most hair raising adventures of anyone I've ever met, will be speaking in Boulder, Colorado as follows:
Sy Montgomery on tour for the book "Birdology: Lessons Learned from a Pack of Hens, a Peck of Pigeons, Cantankerous Crows, Fierce Falcons, Hip Hop Parrots, Baby Hummingbirds, and One Murderously Big Cassowary"
When: Wednesday, May 19 2010, 07:30 PM
Where: Boulder Book Store, 1107 Pearl Street

She's also the author of the bestseller, "The Good Good Pig", and has written a myriad of books for grade school kids in the ongoing series about Scientists in the Field. I recommend you go see her if you're in the area!

Stacey,

I got your book and enjoyed reading it. Since I'm a Molly & McGee follower, it gave me some insight.

Thanks for sharing your life with us.

For all you Barn Owl fans - if you can tear yourself away from the M&M owlet's first steps out of their box, the Netherlands Barn Owl just had 1 of her 6 eggs hatch. You can start all over again... or see the first stages of the process if you missed it with M&M.

www.beleefdelente.nl/kerkuil

Kerkuil is the name for Barn Owl in Dutch. The Beleef de Lente 2010 (Experience the Spring 2010)site is very good - but in Dutch. I found that by using Google's Chrome browser, I could use the auto-translate feature, and at least get the gist of a lot of the info - not perfect by a long shot, but helpful. (No problem having more than 1 browser on your computer - you just have to decide which one is your "default" browser - the one that starts automatically, say, if you click a web link in an e-mail). Unfortunately, the Beleef forums do not come up translated - an issue of their site design I think (I've sent an e-mail to them about it today - will post if any work-around is possible).

Also - on the Beleef site - the list to the right side of the video stream gives past highlight video clips - a good way to get the back story on a given nest. "lets gemist? Kijk hier:" means "Missed something? Look here:" Clips tend to run 1-3 minutes. Date notations are backwards for us - day, then month.

Enjoy!
(tho be forwarned - esp. if you have kids watching, a few of the nest outcomes are sad, esp. the Koolmees (Tomtit - looks a bit like a Chickadee) this spring. Most doing just fine. I like the back story of the Torenvalk (Kestral) box, the nest that at first kept looking unused to me).

Stacey,

Can't wait to see you! I'll be there and for sure introduce myself...we've had a few conversations in chat ;)

I keep logging on to check in but every time I do, I see someone saying "oh, no food because they are coaxing the kids out to hunt for themselves." And then I get disgusted and click off. Maybe I'll start watching a truly non-profit one suggested here.

I want to SCREAM!

Hi Stacey,

I'll be brief. Many of us are asking questions about the current situation of M & M. I am curious about whether they are coaxing them with food, as catbirdcan has asked; however, my question concerns the flashes from Carlos' camera every time one of them lands on the owl house or on the outside perch. He says they don't affect the owls...How can that be true? They certainly affect our eyes! Could this (the flashes) deter the parents from feeding them or deter the owlets from wanting to branch? I would appreciate your comments. I am currently reading your book and am truly enjoying it! Thank you for your expertise!

I just came on to ask about the flashing as well....they definitely turn around or act a little startled....carlos is flashing right as the owlet is in a precarious position, like on one leg and then he goes and flashes.....i know lightening to me isn't like a flash from a camera several feet away vs. miles.

I am learning about owls since M&M and don't know much but I want to place a bet that they are not enticing those owlets at all by withholding food or anything else but maybe language. The instinct is to feed those owlets. I am curious as to how well I have guessed!

Stacey, I JUST missed you in Molly's overflow chat! I got back from dinner out and logged on to Overflow to see if the owlets were out yet, and you were a voice crying in the wilderness. I responded immediately but you must have been just gone. We missed each other by a minute.
