The instinct is to feed those owlets. I am curious as to how well I have guessed!Daduhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00290244750760003778noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2389421550592866269.post-19775491596511933342010-05-17T22:31:15.208-07:002010-05-17T22:31:15.208-07:00I just came on to ask about the flashing as well.....I just came on to ask about the flashing as well....they definitely turn around or act a little startled....carlos is flashing right as the owlet is in a precarious position, like on one leg and then he goes and flashes.....i know lightening to me isn't like a flash from a camera several feet away vs. miles.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11726128204434935715noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2389421550592866269.post-40779853815296189312010-05-17T22:23:31.471-07:002010-05-17T22:23:31.471-07:00Hi Stacey,

I am curious about whether they are coaxing them with food, as catbirdcan has asked; however, my question concerns the flashes from Carlos' camera every time one of them lands on the owl house or on the outside perch. He says they don't affect the owls...How can that be true? They certainly affect our eyes! Could this (the flashes) deter the parents from feeding them or deter the owlets from wanting to branch? I would appreciate your comments. I am currently reading your book and am truly enjoying it! Can't wait to see you! I'll be ...Stacey,

Can't wait to see you! I'll be there and for sure introduce myself...we've had a few conversations in chat ;)

I keep logging on to check in but every time I do, I see someone saying "oh, no food because they are coaxing the kids out to hunt for themselves." And then I get disgusted and click off. Maybe I'll start watching a truly non-profit one suggested here.

I want to SCREAM!Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11726128204434935715noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2389421550592866269.post-35408328141368067132010-05-17T14:30:43.653-07:002010-05-17T14:30:43.653-07:00For all you Barn Owl fans - if you can tear yourse...For all you Barn Owl fans - if you can tear yourself away from the M&M owlet's first steps out of their box, the Netherlands Barn Owl just had 1 of her 6 eggs hatch. You can start all over again... or see the first stages of the process if you missed it with M&M.

www.beleefdelente.nl/kerkuil

Kerkuil is the name for Barn Owl in Dutch. The Beleef de Lente 2010 (Experience the Spring 2010)site is very good - but in Dutch. I found that by using Google's Chrome browser, I could use the auto-translate feature, and at least get the gist of a lot of the info - not perfect by a long shot, but helpful. (No problem having more than 1 browser on your computer - you just have to decide which one is your "default" browser - the one that starts automatically, say, if you click a web link in an e-mail). Unfortunately, the Beleef forums do not come up translated - an issue of their site design I think (I've sent an e-mail to them about it today - will post if any work-around is possible).

Also - on the Beleef site - the list to the right side of the video stream gives past highlight video clips - a good way to get the back story on a given nest. "lets gemist? Kijk hier:" means "Missed something? Look here:" Clips tend to run 1-3 minutes. Date notations are backwards for us - day, then month.

Enjoy!
(tho be forwarned - esp. if you have kids watching, a few of the nest outcomes are sad, esp. the Koolmees (Tomtit - looks a bit like a Chickadee) this spring. Most doing just fine. I like the back story of the Torenvalk (Kestral) box, the nest that at first kept looking unused to me).HeyNicePlanethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01479280671569918402noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2389421550592866269.post-70379799754090763762010-05-17T13:26:54.518-07:002010-05-17T13:26:54.518-07:00Stacey,
